With the popularity of both the Wizard of Oz Ruby Slippers and Wizard of Oz Wicked Riches, I’m not surprised that WMS raided another childhood classic story for a big video slot. Alice in Wonderland has spawned a number of slots from many manufacturers over the years and all have taken a slightly different approach. What I really like about the Alice and the Mad Tea Party slot from WMS is that it looks very different to many of the other games in their range, despite a familiar and easy to follow structure.
With a 5x3 reel grid and 30 pay-lines, it doesn’t sound so unique. It’s all about the layout though, more so in the desktop version and land casino slot where the reels are quite small and it’s the animated backdrop that dominates the screen. Alice herself sits on top of the reels and all the characters from the story take turns in appearing and interacting with her. It’s this level of visual work that is usually a hallmark of NetEnt slots such as South Park, it’s good to see the mainstream manufacturers embracing this.
Outside of the relaxing audio and Disney style visuals, Alice and the Mad Tea Party is a pretty simple slot to play. The pay-lines are fixed and you simple select a bet per line of just 0.01 credit and upwards. There is a feature bet attached also which increases in conjunction with the bet per line, this makes the minimum possible stake for all lines and the feature 0.50 credits. Most land casinos limit the game to a 5.00 credit max bet but online that tends to be expanded greatly, allowing far more flexibility for those on a higher bankroll.
With up to 500x the line bet available for 5-of-a-kind symbol combinations the base game has some win potential, though the variance does sit a little low the high RTP tends to compensate and stop it becoming as benign as slots like Starburst for example. It is worth saying that although big combinations pay well, three of a kind wins at 25x the line bet won’t even return the total overall bet so you do need larger combinations or a free spins round to really make this slot pay.
The free spins scatter appears on reels 1+3+5, all three grant you just 6 free games although there is a small multiplier in play and, crucially, a re-trigger. It’s the combination of the win multiplier and the re-trigger that allow for a bonus feature which can pay really well, you just have to hit it right.
Overall, Alice and The Mad Tea Party, despite it’s fun theme is a very casual and relaxing slot, the audio, graphics and even the gameplay are all very good, but laid back in their approach. I like to gamble so I don’t think, as nice as the game is to play that this would draw me away from the two Wizard of Oz Games, although, it’s a much better alternative to very low variance games such as Black Widow or Texas Tea.
