WMS, along with manufacturers like IGT, have a very long and successful history in the slots market. That being said, they are mostly known for their big branded titles, fruit machines and ancient themed slot games like Montezuma. Over the pond, companies like NetEnt have been revolutionising the fruit machine genre with games like Starburst and even the branded slot with the massive Guns N Roses game. The Cool Jewels slot from WMS marks their biggest effort so far to produce something equally unique and visually appealing.
Cool Jewels has a grid layout of 6x6 positions instead of the 3x3 or 5x3 reels of a fruit machine or video slot. If you have ever play Bejewelled Blitz on FaceBook, or Tetris on the old Nintendo, then Cool Jewels will take precisely 30 seconds to get to grips with. In addition to the lack of reels, there is also a lack of pay-lines. The mechanic here is that any four icons which touch form a winning combination. The game setup is no more complicated than picking a bet to play each time.
Whilst the structure and game setup are easy to follow the way the game pays takes a little getting your head round. The symbols themselves have no individual value. Instead, there is a credit / multiplier meter at the left of the game, the more combinations you get the more the meter fills and the higher the payment overall. This leads to very big sequence wins, though, in contrast it makes individual combinations very low value indeed.
The free ‘spins’ on the game are also granted by an accumulator. This is from a second meter on the right of the game screen which is filled by scatter symbols rather than winning combinations. Up to 20 are granted as an initial allowance but with the meter re-fillable, these essentially become like re-triggering free spins with an endless re-trigger. We’ve seen 100x free spins rounds many times on this game and you would be forgiven for assuming this was the big draw, but in fact, it’s the wilds. These replace all other symbols on the game except the scatter but have a secondary explosive feature for each of the three wilds which clears large amounts of other symbols – increasing your chances of accumulated wins filling the meters.
With a higher than average RTP for WMS slots of 96% and medium volatility, you might think this slot has the perfect blend. It’s close, but the hit ratio of tiny single combo wins could be tweaked to get it perfect, though I concede it would remove some of the entertainment value. Overall it’s a fantastic slot and worlds away from most of the WMS range. Younger players are certainly likely to enjoy this more than something traditional like Raging Rhino (One of my own favourites) or even the venerable Buffalo machine.
