Monopoly is far from just the simple board game of many a well spent youth. These days, it’s a complete franchise of products including, a range of slots which form a slightly less well spent adulthood. Big Event is one of the latest and one of the best, it features Barcrest’s most modern version of their high roller mechanic, called ‘big bet’ and, the very best in what they can do graphics wise. I wasn’t always such a fan of branded games and even the other big Monopoly games such as Super Monopoly Money left me a little cold. As a traditional slot player they never really offered enough gambling action, games like this are now offering higher variance which is enticing more traditional slot game players into the mix.
At heart this slot is very simple to play, this is a familiar theme for Barcrest’s games and part of their appeal. There is 20 fixed pay-lines on the 5x3 reel grid and the only thing you can adjust is the bet, which completely determines how the game works. Whilst you can play the game in a standard way, one spin at a time, It’s Barcrest’s big bet feature which really makes their games shine. There are two choices of overall stake, a big bet at 20.00 credits and a super big bet for 30.00, this isn’t a bet per spin, but an overall stake for 5 spins in a row.
Not only does this make bankroll management a cinch, it also activates several game extra game features. On the 20.00 credit big bet, each of the spins has an increasing multiplier, from x1 to x5 over the course of the spins, you start to see immediately why the RTP using these bet formulas increases from an already generous 96% in the stock game – to a frankly unbelievable 99%. Super bet opens up even more, with a lucky wheel draw at the start of the round awarding you either the same progressive multipliers, 5 epic x5 multiplied spins or persisting (sticky) wilds.
There’s clearly a lot going on here over and above the traditional themed game show or board game slot, much like IGT’s popular Wheel of Fortune slot, there’s also quite a special spins round. Whilst it doesn’t offer the retrigger potential of IGT’s bonus round, the spins feature on Monopoly Big Event has its own unique rewards. Cleverly utilising the theme for instance, there’s a jail symbol – which for each you collect removes one of the lower paying symbols from the rest of the spins. Even the initiation for the round uses the theme well, with a pick win chance and community chest round determining how many spins you get and what wild format will be in play.
Even if the big bet feature is out of your bankroll, the free spins round can still trigger, so you don’t lose out on the biggest win potential although, as the spins pay out at the same rate as the triggering bet and the higher RTP, you will clearly win slightly more on average with the big bet than with stock per line bet style. One cautionary note on the game, whilst it has the highest RTP so far of any game in the Monopoly series, it does have slightly higher variance, that return to play number is the average – you can’t produce big bonus wins even with it, without penalising a few players here and there. If safety and long play period are what you are really after, something tamer, such as Texas Tea, is always going to be better.
