Pixies of the Forest is a very unusual IGT game in some ways, especially for land based players who many not be familiar with the style of game which results as a part of IGT’s partnership with online specialists High 5 Games or H5G. It may be a little more familiar to players of the land based Secrets of the Forest game, but even so, this game bucks the trend of many of the core common features of IGT games.
Visually, this is a stunning game, the fairy icons and the reel backdrop especially, so fans of fantasy themes will be deeply impressed. The structure is a 99-line game with a 5x3 reel layout, the lines are grouped in threes which means a 33-coin minimum bet to play all lines. The controls are laid out a little differently than traditional IGT slots like Stinkin Rich (another IGT title with many lines) and somewhat weirdly some of the free to play versions of the game don’t include an auto-spin feature.
That may be a good thing given there is a lot going on here to keep track of. The first game mechanic of note is the tumbling reels feature, if you’ve played NetEnt’s Gonzo Quest (NetEnt produce the similar low volatility Starburst Slot) you might know this better as the avalanche feature. Here, where a win exists on the screen the symbols fall away to be replaced by fresh ones from above – a little like Tetris but with the inclusion of a wild symbol. This sequence stops when no more wins are formed. Usually you might get one extra win on your initial result, but there’s plenty of videos showing players hitting double digits with a lucky hit on this feature.
Next up is the free spins round, you can hardly have an IGT game without one after all. However, on Pixies of the Forest you get only 11 free spins at max pick. I say max pick as before the round commences you must pick one of the triggering scatters to reveal the assigned spins value – which could be as low as 5. Here we run into the problem of multiple bonuses, one in the base game and, a slightly lower than average RTP. The hit ratio is also high, game sessions on Pixies of the Forest tend to be lots of small, but regular wins and even a free spins bonus round is unlikely to grant anything big.
Pixies of the Forest is a pretty and entertaining slot game, sadly, it lacks any real bite. Casual slots players will enjoy long minimal risk play sessions and the occasional lucky slots gambler will enjoy a big hit or two. High rollers, avoid it, this really does lend itself to free play rather than cash play, other IGT slots such as Lobstermania 2 are nearly as entertaining, but have far more to offer. Though that comes, as always, at an increase in risk.
