Roaring Forties from Novomatic might create a bit of anticipation amongst those who haven’t played it yet as the name would indicate a retro themed 1940’s style video slot, hopefully along the same lines as other better graphically produced Novomatic titles in recent times such as Cirque Du Cheval. You’ve probably guessed by the fact that I’m bringing it up that it very much isn’t and, in fact, it’s actually a fairly basic looking fruit machine. There is a nod to the forties theme with the backdrop, but the reel symbols are bars bells and all the other familiar Novomatic fruit machine symbols, the music is also back to basics.
You might wonder then why I’ve included the game! Well, first off Novomatic are known for exactly this type of game, it’s this kind of classic slot machine that sees their games played worldwide in land casinos and especially in Europe. Second and, more important, whilst the game might look basic, it has a fair bit more in it in one sense than most of their famous fruities thanks to the fact it has a total of 40 active pay-lines in play. That’s double what you get on the likes of Plenty on Twenty and four times what the legendary Book of Ra Deluxe can offer you.
A much larger number of pay-lines offers far more ways to win so, generally a good thing. As always it does come with a caveat, 10-line fruit machines and below, even on a 5x3 reel grid like this will tend to offer you more for individual wins on one line. The overall pay-out or RTP is the same after all but it’s spread out over far more lines. Even four symbol combinations of the lower pay-out icons can feel a little weak. The variance too is less, it’s firmly in the medium range which means less volatility overall than many of Novomatic’s fruit machines, this in turn means bankroll management is easier and the game is likely to be kinder on the wallet over the long term.
It might not be the most entertaining game in Novomatic’s arsenal or the most richly rewarding but, that’s what makes it unique. It offers more regular wins than the small pay-line slots and less risk than the high volatility slots. Also, though the graphics and audio may not be something you will be singing from the hills about, it’s better looking than some of the most basic Novomatic games and retains a very simple playability. The games available here as a free to play slot emulator and, of course, I’ve included a list of the best real money casinos to play the slot at, all of which I have personally tested!
