WMS must consider it quite a coup that the latest slot game release to be based on the Monopoly board game series is being released by them rather than rival developer ITG, who produced the last two games. In taking over any franchise, be it the movies, games or in this case gambling, it becomes highly important to deliver a big follow on, fortunately for WMS it seems they have proved more than equal to the task with one of their best online releases yet.
Compared to other branded slot releases the Monopoly theme has a big advantage in that its market appeal is going to be much wider ranging than a game based on a movie or band that would only target fans in that niche such as WMS’s Kiss slot machine. Keen to make the most of several generations of players who will be intimately familiar with the game, WMS have produced a completely bespoke title without any of their off the shelf royal playing card symbols or traditional casino sound effects.
The graphics, presentation and audio, in addition to being unique to the game are also of a much higher quality than we have seen on previous WMS slot game releases such as Black Knight or the Goldfish slots. Branded titles carry a cost of involvement for the software developer much higher than their traditional slot titles and, great news for players, they invest much more highly in the production quality of these games as a result.
Outside of all the razzmatazz of the game screen itself and all the expected Monopoly game symbolism, this particular title is completely dominated by attempting to trigger one of the six individual bonus rounds. A particular favourite for me is the Monopoly super wheel of fortune where a granted pick win bonus, which has up to eight picks, also has a ‘grant all’ pick, hit one of those and you are going to be into profitability in a big way.
If you are in one of the countries where it is available this is very much a game you are going to want to play, versus the older ITG titles and even WMS’s other Monopoly slot games this is a vast improvement. The variance is somewhere between medium to high so it has been put together as a genuine gambling game rather than entertainment for casual slots players, though it still manages to accomplish that with ease also.
One minor downside of the combination of a higher level of variance and the big linked bonus rounds is that the pay-out potential in the base game does suffer a little. It’s a minor critique though as it isn’t really possible to have one without the other unless you go for a low variance game with regular small wins like the Ghostbuster slot game from IGT instead.
