Old school slot players (Myself included) often struggle to find simple high variance games to have a real gamble on. I’m not decrying modern video slots or entertaining branded games like Titanic – I think they are great but, they tend to be very low volatility. Nothing comes simpler, or with more risk/reward than the 3-reel fruit machine, there’s still a high demand for these games and modern titles like Triple Red Hot 777 have proven very popular. Super Times Pay shares some similarities with that game, as it uses modern bonus rounds and features from the video slots genre to spice up the simple 3-reel action.

Where Super Times Pay differs, is in its visual presentation, this isn’t as showy as some modern games, it’s built from the ground up as a traditional one-armed bandit. This can be hard to do, with many games in this style trying too hard to be retro and looking a little kitsch as a result, fortunately, Super Times Pay gets it smack on, I actually think it fills this niche better than even the venerable Double Diamonds game.

Getting things right stylistically is only half the battle, for a 3-reel game to be a hit it needs to offer serious win potential for fans of these slots. Again, Super Times Pay walks the line perfectly, it may look and sound benign, but the volatility can be brutal, ironically, something the high roller very much desires. The multiplying wilds supply much of the action, by using two to complete a winning combination, both of the multiplier values displayed are assigned to the win. Whilst the game doesn’t have a traditional jackpot, three wilds in series grant you up to 10000x times your line bet, which is ludicrous and, as you may have guessed, extremely rare.

No IGT slot game would be complete without a spins round and, the high variance games like this one always seem to come with ridiculous re-trigger potential. Here it’s up to 999 spins on offer, with 10 on the initial win. The scatter isn’t a separate symbol but rather a layover graphic on existing icons, so the combination possibilities for both wins and re-triggers is constant, as is the anticipation! It might seem unlikely to hit a couple of hundred spins in one game, but it happens, there’s a reason the limit is specified in the game rules after all, that one in a million potential, is what keeps people hungry for this type of slot. Evidently this is one for the high stakes player and the variance is a killer for a small stakes player with a lower bankroll. In fairness to Super Times Pay, it isn’t aiming to please everyone, it’s trying to be very good at one thing, which it largely achieves. For those looking for something a little friendlier, IGT’s Lobstermania 2 or Texas Tea slots are going to suit you much more than this. Gamblers with a gleam in their eye however, feel free to play on.
