Most of the big slot gaming manufacturers aren’t adverse to copying popular themes from each other when they see a particular style or theme become successful, with the success of IGT’s Wolf Run, the Werewolf Wild slot might at first glance appear to be one of those games. In truth though, this is a pretty unique title in Aristocrats range and it integrates the theme into to the gameplay much more effectively than some of their older slot titles. You can really see which games were developed when online play was in full swing and the developers had that in mind versus the games which were only ever intended for land casino play.
The online version of the Werewolf wild slot, whether as a free play slot or cash game, has 25 fixed active pay-lines on its 5x3 reel grid, pretty standard fare. The win sequence animations and audio are also traditional off the shelf Aristocrat items, as are the low pay playing card icons. The rest of the imagery is very Victorian England, perfectly in tune with an old werewolf story. They liven it up with some unusual animations for the Werewolf Wild symbols, an intro to the bonus feature and some bespoke effects, it adds up to something a little more than the average Aristocrat production.
As with pretty much all slots in the modern field (with the exception of the big reel slots like Spartacus) there isn’t much action to be found in the base game aside from the usual guess the card gamble game after a small win. You do need all the production extras they have in place to entertain you whilst you wait patiently and (hopefully) trigger the free spins bonus round. One thing the base game does have is a random wild addition where the werewolf will scratch his claws across the screen and turn several symbols wild, it’s infrequent and doesn’t always complete a pay-line, it’s very welcome when it does however.
The free spins round is where it all gets interesting, 3, 4 or 5 scatter symbols trigger 7, 14 or 28 free spins (re-triggerable) and open up the werewolf touch bonus. Any time the werewolf wild appears on the screen adjacent to one of the human characters they are ‘infected’ by the werewolves touch and also transform into wilds, if further eligible icons are next to the new wilds, they turn also. This has the potential to turn a complete miss of a spin into nearly a full screen very quickly and it’s an excellent example of theme integration into gameplay.
Outside of the stock offering of spins and feature there is also a random coin feature when a coin appears on reel 1 and a wild appears anywhere else on the screen, a random multiplier is awarded up to 40x the bet in this case. All this bonus action makes Werewolf Wild a very playable game and you will find a frequent hit ratio and a solid RTP of 95%, sadly, those two facts combined does rather limit the number of large wins. High risk players may find themselves more suited to other games from Aristocrat, such as the Double Happiness slot.
